Nothing startles me in African political history like the fact that after a harrowing twenty seven years imprisonment for fighting against apartheid in South Africa Nelson Mandella when nominated to run for presidency of the country he suffered so much for still found himself contending with at least one of his countrymen for that office. That is the beauty of the byzantine affair called politics and the irony of our social blessedness called democracy.
